Strange Whine: A Holiday Gift -- Strange Whine is an e-book that I worked on for much of 2007, and never quite felt like it was finished to my satisfaction. So in the spirit of re-gifting, I'm fobbing it off on you, insert smiley-face emoticon here.

What it is is a collection of my essays and reviews in PDF format for easy printing-out or reading on your screen at your convenience. If you do download it, I'd love any feedback you might want to offer. And if you do download it, I hope you get some enjoyment out of it.

It's pure shit, of course.

Anybody who's anybody knows that Chuck Dixon and Geoff Johns are da bomb! I mean, right now, through sheer professionalism, Chuck Dixon is probably working on the sixth-hence issue of whatever book he happens to be writing right now (Chuck Dixon's still writing comics? I thought they put him out to pasture at the same time as CrossGen), in which, er...somebody hits something, the villain has some pseudo-intellectual rant to himself, somebody hits something else...maybe a ninja or some shadowy stranger...that might be a ninja, the hero has a moral quandary about some hazy political issue (maybe gun control, maybe abortion), the hero beats up the villain, and then the Republicans win! See, writing gold. ;-)

Kidding aside, nice collection. Full of joy and hope, and hopeful joy. I think I've actually read all of the source material before, but I liked the commentary on the commentary. One can never have too much commentary. ;-)

...and Brian Hibbs is, of course, wrong. In the past two years, I haven't picked up a single issue of Superman, but I have been buying the new trade collections of the Love & Rockets series this year. The new trade dress is amazing.

Thanks for all that, d.

Out of some sense of misguided hope, or perhaps self-abuse, I read Dixon's six-issue Midnighter/Grifter miniseries.

Which is total shit from beginning to end. There's not as much anti-gay shit as you'd expect, but the plot is as dopey as any of the worst Wildstorm projects, with total redefinition of the characters' powers to suit the whims of the moronic story, and PEOPLE BREATHING ON MARS.

Oh, and I am loving the new Love and Rockets TPBs too. In some cases it's the fourth time I've bought/read the material, but it's as fresh and thrilling as ever and packaged in some great-looking books.

ADD-- I just saw your followup post to this and look forward to reading this over the next couple of days.

I'm surprised more people haven't thought of doing something like this.
