Living in the Post-Peak Oil World -- A new study being released today says we're already past the point of peak oil production. That's a sobering thought for this Monday morning.

In a sane world, this would be the top news story today from any responsible media outlet. Too bad there are so few of those. But if you haven't read any of my pieces on the subject, here are two relevant articles:

* The End of the World, an exploration of my awakening to the cold reality of Peak Oil.

* Completely at Ease: An Interview with James Howard Kunstler, in which I discuss the coming crisis with one of the most visionary and outspoken authors on the subject.

Sooner or later the life of virtually every person on Earth will be affected by the result of oil depletion, and it's likely today's study will be looked back at as a landmark moment of realization, albeit one that came far too late for anything to be done about it.

I personally have not owned a car for nearly three years, but I still am heavily dependent on others who do, and once you start looking at the real consequences of a world running out of its primary source of energy, you realize it's pretty damned comprehensive, the impact of this impending Long Emergency, which today takes another step closer to all of us.

Hello Alan,

I have been following Comic Book Galaxy since near the beginning, and recently discovered your writeblog after following the link from Howard Kunstler's website.

I didn't see any comments function there, so i have commented here. Thank you for a very insightful and informative interview. I think you both did very well in expanding on some of the themes in the Long Emergency, and I was heartened by the optimistic tone as well. I think the human race will probably survive, but unfortunately, not in such huge numbers as today. I only wish that those who most actively helped to get us into this mess will not see their descendents ruled a much-reduced world.

The other blog entries that I found interesting, (and please forgive any presumptiousness on my part) were the letter to your co-worker, and the one regarding intimacy.

They seem to me to be very closely related actually. It shines through in both entries that you have a high degree of perception and awareness of others. I think your writing actually displays a great passion for life, (or at least what interests you) and that you have what it takes for intimacy...if you can't say what you feel to your wife, show her the post. It is curious that you seem to say to strangers on the Internet what you can't say in person...(but then again, that is what I am doing now :-) )

Anyhow, again, please forgive my presumptiveness, but as I said, I have enjoyed reading CBG, and particularly appreciate an adult take on comics. Finding an adult take on the world as a whole through the writeblog is an extra bonus. I wouldn't have written this except that the intimacy post in particular hit home with me, since I am 41 and don't have a wife and family. Sometimes it all seems rather pointless, I agree, but you have people you love and who love you.

I notice that all comments must be approved, so feel free to edit or delete this as you see fit.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, John. Nothing presumptuous about what you wrote at all, I'm really grateful you took the time to tell me what you think, and that you got so much out of what you found on my blog.
