New BREAKDOWNS, LAST CALL, and CBG Reviews
We've got a full Friday, faithful readers (Man, that's a lot of alliteration even for me!). Chris Allen's new BREAKDOWNS discusses "Acroculture". Johnny Bacardi's LAST CALL looks at some of this weeks comics, plus Bryan Miller reviews GIRLS #1-2, Ian Brill reviews SOLO #5, and Jog reviews NIGHTJAR #1-4 and NIGHTJAR: HOLLOW BONES.

Flytrap coverage! Cool.
And I couldn't agree more about Walt & Skeezix. I'd enjoyed the Sunday strips that ran in Drawn and Quarterly, but like Chris, I picked it up because of a last minute price break at San Diego. So I was a surprised as him when it turned out that I absolutely LOVED the book. My wife and I are both working our way through it, and we're constantly stopping each other to point out a favorite strip. While I'm a real sucker for the sentimental stuff, the April 1st gag is my lagh-out-loud favorite.
It's hard not to be impressed by how much King likes his characters. There's so much real warmth and affection in his depictions.
I happened to stumble over an old issue of Cerebus the other day- the one where he throws the crying baby off the roof, and I couldn't help but note an interesting point of comparison.
Skeezix crying is fairly regulaar gag fodder in the Early gasoline Alley, but King didn't turn it into a horror-show the way Dave Sim did.
Sim's gag used closeups, expressive lettering and wild caricature to emphasize the baby's unbearable screaming, and did everything he could to make the reader feel Cerebus' discomfort. King avoided trickery, and kept the camera back, going for little laughs from an audience that appreciated Walt's difficulties because they'd shared them at one time or another.
Looking forward to reading FLYTRAP, and I was very impressed with Chris's take on Walt and Skeezix, which made me like it even more than I did to begin with...
